Renovation and remodeling projects not only greatly enhance the comfort and livability of a home, but can also be wonderful investments. Depending on the home improvement project, a homeowner can often see a return of 100 percent or more on their investment.

Below you'll find ballpark costs for some of the more popular home improvement projects. For do-it-yourselfers, subtract the labor costs but add lots of time. Keep in mind that costs will fluctuate depending on where you live, the grade of materials used, the size of room, and other factors.

Kitchen
  • Laminate countertops ($1,000 for materials, $500 for labor)
  • Custom lighting ($500 for materials, $200 for labor)
  • Laminate flooring ($600 for materials, $400 for labor)
  • Garbage disposal ($150 for materials, $100 for labor)
  • Cabinet facelift ($200 for materials, $1,000 for labor)
  • Painted maple cabinets ($15,000 for materials, $5,000 for labor)
  • Skylight installation ($1,500 for materials, $1,500 for labor)


Bathroom
  • Whirlpool tub ($2,000 for materials, $1,000 for labor)
  • Toilet ($250 for materials, $150 for labor)
  • Ceramic tile (50 cents to $10 per square foot for materials, $300 for labor)
  • Ground fault circuit receptacle ($50 for materials, $50 for labor)

Bedroom

  • Sand and refinish hardwood floors ($1.50 to $3 per square foot for materials, $750 for labor)
  • Drywall over existing walls plaster ($1.50 to $2.50 per square foot, $1,000 for labor)
  • Trim and wall surface paint job ($400 for materials, $1,000 for labor)


Basement
  • Sump pump replacement ($250 for materials, $200 for labor)
  • Water heater replacement ($350 for materials, $200 for labor)
  • Minor refinishing ($4,000 for materials, $2,500 for labor)
  • High efficiency forced-air furnace replacement ($3,500 for materials, $1,500 for labor)
